Healthy Diet for July 29 – Nutrition Data

Looking for iron-rich foods, or perhaps low-sodium foods? Wonder how the nutrition in soyburgers compares with beef burgers?

Food labels offer easy access to “top-line” nutrient and calorie data for one serving of any food. But what if you need more than the label’s Nutrition Facts? Just log on to the Internet. The U.S. Department of Agriculture maintains an online National Nutrient Database with more than 6,000 food items.

For easy access to this nutrient database:

  • Click onto www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/. You can scroll through the alphabetical food list, organized by food groups, and get information on about 30 nutrients for every food that’s listed.
  • Download the information for easy use on your personal computer or handheld personal digital assistant (PDA) with a Palm operating system.
