Healthy Diet for October 7 – Pizzazz in Your Pizza

Is pizza good for you? Sure, especially if you eat just what you need (likely a couple of slices). One slice (Vs of a 12-inch pizza) may supply about 185 calories and 5 to 7 fat grams; half of the same pizza, about 750 calories and 20 to 30 fat grams. Remember, cheese has bone-building calcium; tomato sauce has several antioxidants, including beta carotene, vitamin C, and lycopene.

October is National Pizza Month. If oven-ready pizza’s on tonight’s menu, give it pizzazz (and a few more nutrients). Top pizza with flavorful, nutritious extras to help you eat five to nine servings of fruits and veggies daily.

  • Load on the greens: chopped broccoli, shredded spinach, snow peas, sliced zucchini.
  • Pepper with flavor: red, yellow, and green peppers. For more taste excitement, try Anaheim peppers, or even hotter jalapenos!
  • “Veg it up” even more: shredded carrots, sliced shiitake mushrooms, asparagus spears, kidney beans or any beans, even leftover vegetables.
